I was looking for some nice hairbrushes. I have used boar brushes in the past and I did like them. However, they did not hold up very well and they were quite difficult to come by. I found this and decided to give it a try. Yes, it is definitely more expensive but if it holds up better than all the cheaper brands then I say, “money well spent.” Feels soooo nice on my head. :o) I have had this for 2 years and it is holding up exceptionally well. Still looks and feels brand new.

As a child I was taught about using a good brush for healthier hair and the distribution of oils on the scalp. A boar’s hair bristle brush is just the fine tool needed!
I especially loved the info sheet that was included with this product. You are treated to the history and care that goes into fine craftsmanship. Highly recommend this product!

This bristles on this brush are way too soft (not coarse enough) and too pliable and set too close to each other, in order to penetrate the hair, massages the scalp and thoroughly clean the hair shaft. Therefore, it only slides on the hair and renders it totally useless. Very disappointing.

For a long, long time (maybe 15 years?) I have been using a synthetic brush from Sally Beauty Supply with bristles that are similar in length, spacing and firmness to the Calcutta. I always really liked it for my fine hair as it breaks easily and the bristles grab loose hairs and prevent them from falling on me or onto the floor. I’m glad I went with the Calcutta both for the above reason and because I appreciate that the bristles are firm enough to reach my scalp. The softer brush made by this manufacturer would have been too soft to accomplish that and I wouldn’t have liked it (my boyfriend has a boar-bristle brush with soft bristles and they just seem to bend when I run it over my hair and barely grab anything). The bristles on this brush are a bit prickly, but probably a necessary feature for reaching the scalp. I don’t much care for the handle; the wood is very lightweight and dry feeling. For the cost of the brush I wish it had a little more heft and a glossy finish which would have made it a little grippier. I will likely add a few coats of varnish, being careful to wrap the bristles beforehand. This will also make the wood more tolerant to water exposure and cleaning. Overall, though, I like this brush, and after manually pulling the oils from my scalp to my ends with my fingers, this brush finished the job nicely, distributing the oils more evenly throughout my hair (it is a fine-textured, medium thickness chin-length bob).

As far as price, I’m a pretty frugal person, but I figured a brush like this is something of an investment so I wanted one I wouldn’t have to replace in 2 or 3 years (ultimately spending more than I would have on this brush). The manufacturer also seems like it will be around for a while.

In summary, it is my opinion that unless one has a very short, thin head of hair or a super sensitive scalp this is the brush to buy.

Bristles stiff enough but not too stiff.

This brush is great for my super long hair. It doesn’t rip through the strands like plastic bristles. The handle is comfortable and I love the butterfly decoration on it. It shipped so quickly too! This brush is great for all lengths of hair ESPECIALLY long hair (mine is to the bottom of my bum). I saw improvement in the appearance of my hair in just one week and I believe it is because the brush helps distribute natural oils down the hair shaft. LOVING IT!

  9. Michelle

I just received it. It’s a beautiful wood grain brush a that I had engraved with my name. I love how it feels on my scalp and hair. I’m 66. I have natural fine hair. I stroked it a few times and I have more volume! Ha!

  10. Chris

I have always had fine hair, now that it is thinning, sometimes it feels like it is no thicker than a single spider webs strand. The bristles are so tight that the hairbrush seems to just go over the top of my hair instead of through to the lower levels. I would have returned it had that been an option. It does make it easier to clean the brush :-/

  11. JH

Excellent bristles, comfortable, lightweight wooden handle and nice size (not too big). Love to buy another smaller (travel friendly) size if that were available. Excellent quality brush. German quality.
