When I used the Proactiv Cleaning System a few months ago, I had what I thought was an allergic reaction to it: itching, swelling, redness of my face. My eyelids were swollen, and I didn’t even use it around my eyes. But I was following the instructions which were, to use the products twice a day every day. That was overkill!!!! I was refunded by Proactiv and stopped the treatment immediately. I kept it for a month in case there was a problem with that particular lot # for those products (there were 4 in all) Once the month was up, I threw them all away. Within a couple of days, my acne returned with a vengeance! I decided to go to Amazon and see if I could get just the cleanser. I was able to order just that one product. I started using it every other day,then after a week, I started using it every day but only at night. After I clean with Proactiv for only about a minute, I apply Gold Bond Healing Lotion for moisture. I use it at night because I take 25mg of Benadryl to help me sleep, so it helps in case I develop a rash again. I had a very little bit of itching the first few times I used it, but no swelling or redness. It is GREAT! I will now use it on a regular basis but never more than daily. It works miracles! I am 57 and still having serious acne problems but since I adjusted the dose I am almost acne-free and I no longer have to take a daily antibiotic that I had been taking for over 3 years! I will be a proactiv fan for life!
high maintenance –
Although the ingredients in the scrub are similar to many others on the market, it is the only one that actually has an effect on my skin problems. I’ve been using it off and on for over 20 years and it’s as powerful as ever.

I made the switch-over from the original Proactiv facial system to the new Proactiv+.
Glad as others are that each part of the system can be purchased separately, because I also go through way more facial cleanser than I do the other parts of the system (I don’t even know what half of them are for and I haven’t opened them since I got the kit when it first came out from Proactiv). It’s a bit pricey, but the 90-day tube does last about that given I only wash my face in the morning. I can feel the exfoliation and it’s kind of just a “sandy” feeling. I don’t know if it’s the new formula of the cleanser or hormones or the fact I now only drink lemon water, but I went from breaking out constantly (I’m 44) to getting a pimple MAYBE every 6 months IF THAT. I do not use the toner or mask, and again, don’t ask me what is all in the full kit. If I have a pimple, I nip it in the bud with whatever # in the system is the 2.5% benzoyl peroxide pimple attacking lotion and it goes away in a day or two. While you might think something like Stridex, having 10% benzoyl peroxide would better, it totally isn’t. It over-dries and will not clear your face any more quickly. Watch Proactiv carefully, though–as with MANY other acne medications, they will be labeled in the store or even with some of the Proactiv products under some heroic misnomer, when the active ingredient is 2% salicylic acid. It works for some people, but ill-advised for severe acne. It’s alright for blackheads, but pimple power, for me anyway, goes to Practiv+ wash.

My history with ProActiv goes back almost 25 years. I always had acne throughout my teens and I was about 28 years old when the product started to be presented on QVC. The set at the time was expensive for me, but I thought it wouldn’t hurt seeing the results on tv.
Within the first few weeks, my skin cleared up completely and I never looked back. My life changed because I wasn’t hiding. I had the pimples that had hard centers and were painful, along with blackheads and your standard whiteheads. I even went to a dermatologist who prescribed an antibiotic which worked at first but after I grew a tolerance to it, my acne returned. He wanted to start Accutane, but the side effects were very severe and I didn’t want to go there.
I started with the three pack that back in the day included this exfoliator, the toner and lotion with the benzoyl peroxide or salaysitic acid. I can’t recall which ingredient is in it and I’m not at home to check. The mask also came with it and they said you should use it weekly. I used it everyday for twenty years without irritation to my skin and better results. A few years ago, I’ve don’t use it at all. I use the exfoliator and the lotion.
You have to be religious in using it two times a day. Now I even get compliments on my skin. It also lighten up the red spots left by old pimples. I think I should be a paid ambassador for the product. Give it a try. You can always return it. As you can tell, I can’t say enough about it. I’d tried every product on the market and nothing came close to these results. Life changer.
