Great sturdy razor, nice and comfortable to use. The handle is quite short though!

The Merkur 34C Classic 2-Piece Double Edge Safety Razor is a remarkable piece of engineering. From the moment I first used it, I was impressed by its solid construction and comfortable grip. The heavy-duty short handle provides excellent control and balance, making each shave smooth and precise. Its design ensures a safe and irritation-free shave, ideal for both beginners and experienced users. The craftsmanship reflects high German quality standards, offering reliability and durability. The 34C delivers a close shave with minimal effort, enhancing your grooming routine significantly. For those seeking a dependable and stylish razor, the Merkur 34C is an outstanding choice.

It’s taken awhile to buy a DE razor. Looking for a close shave. Also was recently concerned about the waste involved with disposable razors. I started with switching to soap and brush some time ago which was a great improvement. I also researched an unhealthy number of different razor brands. My usual method is to try a cheap model, then buy the better one later if I liked it. Two reasons I chose not to follow that process this time: First, if I bought a cheap one and cut up my face, I may not consider a quality upgrade. Second, after reading and watching tons of reviews, many of them would say “it’s almost as good as the 34C”. To save my face and to avoid buying a throwaway DE razor, I thought it best to buy the real thing.

First Shave Impressions: Based on recommendations, I bought a sample pack of assorted razors which included a blade that was reviewed as a good starter blade. This way I can try a few brands without having 99 blades leftover. I also bought an Alum Block just in case I cut myself as well as a metal blade bank for blade disposal /recycling. Following my normal wet shave process, I noticed that the razor handle itself is much heavier and shorter than I’m used to. I’ve been told the shave angle makes a difference, so I’ll have to work on that. For today, I didn’t have to use the Alum Block! Shave was close. Happy with the first shave. I think I made a good decision. I’ll post an update after a few more blades are tested.

I like most men was sick of paying high prices for Gilette Fusion blades (or the like) and sick of razor burn. I got to where I was only shaving once a week. So I started doing some research and decided to give DE shaving a try. Wow, I’m a convert. This razor is awesome, and I paired it with Astra blades and Cremo Mint shave cream. Shaving is now a pleasant experience. I just completed my second day of shaving with the set up (before I would never shave consecutive days in a row), and it was even better today. I was pretty tentative yesterday because I was a little wary of DE shaving. Today, I just went for it and I got a great shave with zero pain or discomfort.

If you are on the fence, pull the trigger, you will not regret it.

If you go to a barber a proper shave takes a bit if time.
The look and feel of the razor is very robust.
Tbh I was very disappointed with my first shave, there was stubble left over. But ivd kind of learned how to do it pretty good.
I use Gillette fusion gel which feels good and makes it easier to shave.
I do 3 shaves. The first one I do a quick shave all over to get the worst of the stubble down on the face and up on the neck. This is where the real shave begins. I thinly reapply the gel and shave up on my face and left to right on my neck. I then do one last one I go across on my face and at a 45 degree angle on my neck. You can hear the hairs being cut. You have to get used to how your stubble grows as I’m sure everyone is different. It takes practice but worth it. After my face feels very smooth with no rash at all and I’d say it’s quite difficult to cut yourself, i havent once yet.

I have sensitive skin and no rash at all, my stubble isnt very course just average I’d say.

I then rinse my face and dry and then use simple moisturiser from tescos to finish off it’s good stuff and spreads well.

    I also use feather blades
    Feel good after.

I am a beginner in double-edge shaving, a new convert, let’s say. My journey, though, was not smooth at all. I started off with the Vikings adjustable razor Emperor Meiji and Viking Blade luxury shaving cream. I must say this combo did not work for me, and I almost thought of switching back to cartridges. However, I decided to give it another go, this time with something that is not adjustable.

After much research, my choices boiled down to the following: MÜHLE R89, Rockwell 6C, and Merkur Mk34c. While I did not try the other two, I must say the Merkur blew my mind. At first, it did not feel as hefty or of as good quality as the Emperor Meiji, but the shaving quality is way better than the Viking and smoother than a cartridge razor, and zero irritation.

I was hesitant to jump into the new world of safety razors, but now looking back I am glad I did. The Merkur MK34C is a great entry handle in my opinion. While I personally haven’t tried any other options out there (besides a $5 piece of junk that I threw away a day later) I can certainly say that for $45 – this was very worth it. It may not have all the bells and whistles that other options may have, but it certainly gets the job done.
My girlfriend also uses the same handle (different blades) and absolutely loves the close shave, the size and cost. I honestly believe this razor setup with a variety pack of blades is a great choice for beginners.
So far I have had it for 3 or 4 months and there are no signs of rust, and it still does an amazing job every single time.
A couple notes. I do think the short handle is indeed short (as the description says) but I didn’t think it would be THAT short. It’s still very usable, but do be aware. A longer handle option may suit you better.
The handle can get kind of slick when using shaving cream even though it has “grips” on it. I would expect that a slightly longer handle may help with this.
All in all, if you are looking for a clean, close shave, cost effective and great quality – this is a fantastic option.

For a beginner into wet shaving using a safety razor, this is the one to choose. No so aggressive like the others models or brand. Good feeling to the hand specially when they get wet.

  11. JerryDon

I really like this shaver. My first safety razor so really nothing to compare to but rarely get cuts or burns from it. I love shaving with this razor much more than my old traditional razor. Does not seem to ever get clogged up. Feels substantial in the hand but also able to get those difficult areas around the nose and ears much better than a multi blade razor.
