After 10 years with a ‘non adjustable’ Merkur HD, it finally started to rot. Chrome delaminated and Zinc rot. Not ideal, but not bad given its life in my shower. I found after a while that I preferred using it loosened 1/2 turn. More aggressive cut, but shaves cleanly in 1 pass with no irritation this way.

I ordered this to replace the old one thinking it would be the proper way to achieve what my backing off 1/2 turn did on the old one. In some respects, I suppose that is true. In others, I kinda miss the old way of doing it.

When I got it, I paint penned in all the numbers and the alignment marks on the blade retainer. This worked well enough. But, I never had to care about this with the old razor.

I found ‘4’ is about as close as I could muster to match my old way of doing things. Its consistent, and it really isn’t BAD. But I prefer my old shave. Not aggressive enough? Dunno. But 3 and 5 were not as good as 4, and 4 is not as good as the old way.

Fit and finish are good, and it *is* a nice razor. But if I had it to do all over again, I’d just buy another HD and keep backing it off 1/2 turn.

2023 (final) update: After a year, my favorite setting was 5+1 = 6 using Gillette Silver Blues. I just retired it.

For comparison I think it shaves similarly to a vintage Gillette Fatboy. But the old Gillette is as good or better than this in some respects. No re-alignment during butterfly blade change. Adjustment is easier and has a broader range of aggressiveness. No pot metal. The weight of the Merkur is nicer, and it is a bit easier to clean. Price was about the same for both.

My daily is now a Razorback Gamechanger .84. RR is cheaper and all stainless. It’s heavy with excellent knurling. Blade changes are not directional. It isn’t adjustable in the traditional sense (you have to buy plates), but I prefer it to any setting I found on the Merkur adjustable.

I still think the HD / 34c is the best value, with an excellent shave and first timer friendly. If they made it in all stainless, that is about the only thing that would talk me into a 5th razor.

Out of the package, the razor seems slightly dirty. Wiped it with alcohol to appreciate the shiny chrome. Tried it with a fresh Astra Platinum (Green) blade on the no.2 setting for 3 passes. Feels smoother than the Parker Variant, which took inspiration from this razor. Smooth shave with a hint of blade feel. Pleasant experience. I’d say this razor would perform well as a daily driver.

Before this I ran the classic 3 piece for 15 years. Nothing wrong with the razor but wanted to try an adjustable. This razor is amazing. I’m used to feeling a slight tug with my classic. With this one I felt nothing. 1st pass set it to 1, second pass ATG to 2-3. Incredibly no razor burn on the neck area and no nicks. It was so easy compared to my old razor that it felt like you’d actually have to try to nick yourself. Unreal. I just wish I got this one 15 years ago. Another thing is it almost doesn’t matter which razor blades you buy because it’s adjustable. You can get it in tune if it’s a bad razor blade which I think is so cool. Highly highly recommend

Love this razor. This did wonders for my shaving technique. With being adjustable, I find many blades, that were unusable, have now become usable. I usually set it on 5, but knock it back to 3 on really problem blades. So happy I bought this. It has infused my joy of shaving.

Wow just wow! I have just recently been turned on to this type of shaving by my barber. I have always just been on the side of the more the better. Learning a bit more about how the multi blade razors work I was open to trying this style of razor. As a novice I turned to the reviews and landed on this razor. Man what a shave, so smooth, so easy, and painless. Tonight I shaved for the first time in 4 days and had a fair amount of growth. Normally this would be painful to shave off, but it was so smooth and painless!! Love it, I’m 100% sold on this brand and style of shaving!!

I hadn’t used a safety razor in many years but, after a lot of research (actually, by my wife), received this as a birthday gift in the hopes it would help clear up what had become persistent issues with ingrown hairs and severe rosacea-like redness on my face over the past couple years. I suspect that masking during the pandemic started the redness issue, but have no way of verifying that. In any case, I had tried every combination of electric and 5- down to 1-blade cartridge razor, including my old standby Gillette Sensor Excel, shaving cream/lotion/gel/soap, and post-shave treatment with no success in repairing my skin. No joke: a week or two wet shaving with this razor immediately eliminated all but the most occasional ingrown, along with most of the redness. I’m getting a great, close shave with no irritation at all. Everyone needs to find what works for them, but in case anyone wonders, here is my routine:

    * I load the handle with Merkur blades. I know there are a lot of comments by others that use different brands, but the Merkur works for me and, even with my heavy beard, the blades last about 3 weeks each.
    * When installing a new blade, I tighten the screw of my Merkur Progress Adjustable all the way down, then back it off by 1/4 turn to get slightly more aggressive. I get a very clean shave with no irritation this way. Tightened all the way, i don’t get a clean shave.
    * I warm my skin in the shower, then wash my face with Acure Ultra Hydrating Green Juice Cleanser. With the cleanser still on my skin, I wet a badger hair shaving brush, then gently go over my face in circles – both directions – rinsing my skin when done.
    * Next, I use Gillette Pro shaving gel, rubbing it onto my face in circles, enough to get under my stubble. I tried several different types, but this rehydrates well, so i can reapply a bit after the first pass and protect my face for a light second pass of the razor. I wish this was unscented, but I’ve finally gotten used to the smell.
    * I lightly hold the short razor handle and gently pass the razor over my face and neck in long single strokes, taking care not to press in – rather, letting the weight of the razor do the work, then rinsing after each pass. After my whole face and neck has been gone over once, as mentioned above, I reapply a thin layer of leftover shaving gel and do a super light pass to get really close.
    * When I’m done showering, I lightly pat dry my face, trying to leave it a little moist until I can put on post-shave treatment. For that, I spray on either Acure Seriously Soothing Rose Water & Watermelon Hydrating Mist or Osea Sea Minerals Mist. When that is mostly soaked in, I put on a tiny amount of Osea Atmosphere Protection Cream. I hate pretty much anything on my face, but these leave my skin soothed, smooth, and hydrated without feeling greasy. Even in the low humidity where I live, my face feels and looks great all day.

A pretty long review – and not all about the razor – but I hope this helps anyone trying to improve both the quality of their shave and also their skin. For anyone intimidated to try a safety razor, don’t be. Follow the tips above on how to hold and use the razor and you’ll be fine. If you go with this or any adjustable, start at the least aggressive setting (most tightened down), then back that off gradually until you find a shave and comfort level that works for you – it will only take a couple times. Finally, though some shavers create an angled guillotine-style blade, don’t try to pull the blade at an angle; doing so is how you get nicks and cuts. Pull so the blade makes “blunt” contact with your skin and you’ll be a convert in no time.
