I shave my face and head and found this razor to be effective. However after about a year and a half of use, it developed weird corrosion, more like erosion into spots. It didn’t seem to affect the performance, but I got tired of looking at it. Unfortunately, I threw it out. Should have posted pictures!

Altamente recomendado. Realmente cambia tu vida.

I came to this razor after using the Wilkinson Sword Classic DE for a month or so (the chrome one, not the “plastic fantastic”), and a long line of cartridge razors for thirty-odd years prior to that.

The Merkur 23C is one of the cheaper options among the mid-priced mild DE razors offered by Edwin Jagger, Muhle and indeed Merkur. I agonised over the choices available, pouring over every review I could find. In the end my desire for a longer handle and 3-piece design (separate handle, base plate and cap) together with its huge popularity swung things in favour of the 23C.

Blade loading is easy and I haven’t experienced any alignment problems with the blades I’ve used (Shark, Derby, Wilkinson, Silver Star). I haven’t missed the twist-to-open (TTO) convenience of the Wilkinson at all. Another thing I haven’t missed is the neck irritation that I consistently experienced with cartridges and even the Wilkinson; that was gone with my first shave with the Merkur. Previously I’d assumed that my skin was sensitive and I needed smoother blades like the Shark and Derby Extra, but in the Merkur sharper just means more efficient and irritation is never a problem. Part of this is down to the head design, but I think the Merkur’s long, slender handle plays its part too; it encourages a delicate, balanced grip which results in precise control. The knurling on the handle prevents slippage even with soapy fingers.

    Good points:
    – Very forgiving; you have to get really sloppy to cut yourself with this razor.
    – The long slender grippy handle and slimline head make for a razor that is very easy to manoeuvre, even under the nose.
    – Irritation-free shave at long last, regardless of blade!
    – No blade alignment issues.

    Bad points:
    – Very mild, maybe too mild. The Derby Extra and Shark Blades that I’d been using with my previous DE razor are now going unused and I’ve had to order more Silver Stars which are substantially sharper.
    – Like EJ and Muhle, Merkur makes its heads from rigid but brittle chrome-plated Zamak (zinc alloy). All these razors share the same weak point: the screw thread on the underside of the cap. If the razor is dropped, or the handle is over-tightened, or the chrome plating is compromised through heavy use, then screw thread is liable to break off the cap.

Decent quality and workmanship. Since finding wet shaving, I started with a few antique Gillette’s and landed on a super basic Edwin Jagger as my daily driver. Thought it was too agressive until I swapped the blades someone recommended to me for something more forgiving blade (Rapira). It’s been pretty smooth sailing since then but I have felt myself wanting for something less slippery and hard to grip from time to time. I’d heard that the basic Merkur head cut similly or identicaly to the EJ but had a better knurled longer handle better suited to my XXL ham fists.

Not so much. Turns out the cutting angle of this razor is different enough that I really can’t seem to get a decent shave from it due to the shallow angle. Tried swapping in the super agressive Feather blades that destroyed my face in every other razor but with this one it barely made a dent. Resigned to just using this on my neck during haircuts…and though it makes the area easier to reach, it still only does a mediocre job at that. Feels like the Merkur does have better workmanship than the Edwin Jagger but I personally can’t say it’s worth it based on how shallowly it shaves.

You don’t have my face though so your mileage may vary.

    EDIT 12/30/2021:

Hard to believe how much difference a year meant to how I’d review this razor. I used to mostly use a shaving oil. Early in the year I decided to try a new shaving soap with my normal shaving oil as a pre-shave. Happened to use this razor with a Rapira blade as the baseline for my first experiment. Holy crap did this make a difference. I managed to get an almost perfectly close shave. No nicks, no cuts, no skin irritation at all. Did the same shave setup later with my Edwin Jagger and got consistently worse results. I liked the soap (Mitchell’s Wool Fat) a lot and got consistently better results from it with this razor. So I decided to settle into using this razor as my daily driver and haven’t needed to look back since.

Every one in a while I’ll still try a shave with just the oil and my Edwin Jagger just to shake things up. But it’s never the same.
Needless to say, I’m changing this review to 5 stars. Turns out that this actually was the perfect razor for my face.

    Who knew?

I bought the Merkur 23C Double Edge Safety Razor on Nov 17, 2023, after having bought my first double edge safety razor of another brand on Oct 21, 2023, which cut me up really good, blood everywhere! Being new to double edge safety razor, I decided to do some research, and from my research, everyone said to buy the Merkur 23C Double Edge Safety Razor if you are new to double edge safety razors. When I received my Merkur 23C on Nov 18, 2023, I unboxed it, and shaved with it for the first time, and got NO CUTS, and NO BLOOD, just a perfect shave! The Merkur 23C closed comb razor is not a real aggressive razor, so I did have some problems in spots that were hard to get to! So on Dec 8, 2023, I bought the Merkur 25C open comb razor, which is a more aggressive razor, It solved my problems with the hard to get to spots! So I suggest having both the Merkur 23C closed comb razor, and the Merkur 25c open comb razor! I am very pleased with having both of those razors !! There are to many variables as to what the best blade is for each user, but my favorite blade is the Astra Platinum Double Edge Safety Razor Blades! FIVE STARS for all three items mentioned in this review! After 40 years of shaving, I finally enjoy shaving !! This is the only way to shave, and the most economical way to shave!! I feel so ripped off by the shaving products that I have used for the last 40 years !! Make the switch to a Double Edge Safety Razor, TODAY !! GOOD LUCK, AND HAPPY SHAVING !!

I remove and clean the blade after each shave, this helps the blade stay sharp so it lasts a long time. The design of this razor makes this easy.

I had been using King C Gillette since I returned to wet shaving recently. I must say it wasn’t a pleasant experience using the King C Gillette razor. I got razor burn with every shave I had. So after watching Geofatboy’s review of this Merkur 23C razor I ordered one for myself.
I am pleasantly surprised with the results. It is a mild but effective razor, without any razor burn at all.
Very easy to grip even with wet fingers and I feel I have a lot of control with the movement of razor too.
Most suitable for people with sensitive skin. I was lucky to get it for less than AED 100, (AED 89 exactly) with superb next day delivery by Amazon too.
overall I am a happy camper now!

This razor worked okay. I’ve gotten closer shaves. It did what a safety razor should in that it kept most of the razor bumps away. However, a few months in the metal started to corrode, and when I dropped it in the shower after using it for 1.5 years it broke. I thought it would last a lifetime. The corrosion weakened the metal to the point where the part that screws in snapped off when it hit the shower floor. Not saying this wouldn’t happen with another safety razor, but I am giving my business elsewhere this time around.

I dipped my toe in the water of safety razors with a different cheaper model, and almost went back to other methods before I found this razor. Now I will never go back! This razor is a life saver, the shaving experience is comfortable and easy. With my old safety razor, I felt like I took my life in my hands if I needed to go over my face a second time. Not a problem here…I can perfect the look without irritating the skin or cutting it at all. Best of all, after using this razor I’m free of the ingrown hairs that have bothered my whole adult life.
Bottom line: if you are looking to try a safety razor and ditch the disposables and electric variety, give this one a try!

Na 15 jaar gebruik tijd voor een nieuwe. Natuurlijk weer precies dezelfde. Duurzaam en ligt prettig in de hand.

  12. Edward McCafferty

I’ve tried several other razors and this by far is the best! Good weight and length for my large hands. Tried to misuse it and didn’t even nick the skin! Very clean and close shave!
