I have dark asian hair (level 3 according to my stylist) and have had my hair chemically processed by bleaching the ends and 1 round of really dark toner. My chemically processed hair still looks really dark, maybe around 2-3 levels lighter only. Anyway, ive tried a few toning shampoos and conditioners before but never had any luck until i gave fanola a try.
Blue shampoo i received was the original formula (with the paraben stuff) while the yellow one is labeled vegan.
My first experiment:
Use different products on different sides: left on photo is no yellow (purple arrow) while right on the photo is no orange (blue arrow)
– left on for 3 hours
– used a shower cap
– applied generous amounts on dry hair (basically tried to cover everything with purple/blue stuff)
– The no orange one really dried my hair out but it isn’t anything a good mask cant fix. It did tone down the orange tinge but not really dramatically. No blue tint left.
– no yellow left a purple tinge and made my hair closer to ash brown.
2nd experiment:
Ok, you cant really see the difference well on these photos but there really is a visible difference in person. I had way better results with the purple shampoo so i decided to use it on both sides this time. I know it is advised to not use toning shampoos every wash so i instead did the experiment on 2nd day unwashed hair.
– there is still a hint of purple on the left side by the time I did experiment 2
– applied generous amounts on dry hair and left for 2 hours
– used with shower cap
– ash brown ends on both sides. I dont think my hair absorbed the stuff evenly but that’s probably more to do with how i applied the shampoo.
Used the same lighting condition and angle for all photos.
I really was expecting to see better results from the no orange shampoo because my hair is brown and on the darker side too. I really did notice a significant difference in brassiness (orange-ness? Whatever it’s called) with the no orange shampoo but I’m a lot more impressed with the no yellow results. Im not sure if the difference between vegan/non-vegan formulas is a factor to effectivity but i do at least feel that the vegan formula is a lot less drying. Hope this review helps fellow dark-haired folks out there who want to know how they work on darker shades — i know there aren’t a lot of reviews on this…

My hair was so brassy and golden and I used these for a WEEK (2x total) and it turned into this beautiful icey platinum. It will turn your hands purple fyi. Best way for my is to apply while my hair is dry, let sit 5-10 minutes and then get wet and wash. Your hair will probably be purple until you wash it again. Love this product
