I’ll try to offer this review with more accuracy and objectivity than some of the ones I have read here.

First, I have to be honest: I nearly returned this premium Gillette set when I discovered the handle I received was different than the up-close photos in this Amazon listing. I perceived it as a cheapened handle, with fewer rubber grips, than the standard Fusion 5 ProShield razor. The decaled “Gillette” logo on the bottom of the handle also seemed simplified from the inlaid logo on the standard metal handle.

But when I tried it out, I realized the handle had a heftier feel, and the part that didn’t have the rubber grip was instead wrapped in a plastic coating that made the metal less slippery. And to be sure, despite some other review I read here, this handle is fully metal, not some “fake metal plastic.” (How do people post this stuff without so much as testing their assumptions?) It’s a hardened metal, possibly stainless steel. How do I know? I put a strong magnet to it. Unlike the normal metal Gillette handle, this handled was attracted to the magnet. The weight is also further evidence. I find it odd that Gillette doesn’t specify any of this.

As for the gift set, it also contains a travel case and eight cartridges. Again, several reviewers have stated the razor doesn’t fit inside the case. Did they think about removing the clear plastic blade guard on the razor cartridge? Without the guard, the razor and attached cartridge fit perfectly. (The blade guard isn’t needed, except for handling and installing a new cartridge, though for anyone who wants to travel with the guard can set it in one of the two indents straddling the handle in the case.)

Until I bought this set, I hadn’t tried the ProShield cartridges. For the past 15 or so years, I had been using my gold-colored Fusion 5 handle with the original ProGlide cartridges (which only have the lubricant strip across the top). In combination with the FlexBall razor handle, the cartridges did a better job than my old razor on my face contours. Note, I only use a razor to shape my beard, so I don’t shave as much or often as most guys, so I’m more picky about a razor’s ability to make shaping easier.

So why am I giving this a 4-star rating, not a 5? Price. At $47, it’s still just a razor handle and eight cartridges, with a travel case thrown in. Gillette currently prices a package of four cartridges at $20, which frankly is ridiculous. The profit the company has gained due to its market dominance had been obvious, but Gillette opened the door to cheaper competitors in recent years. (I also have a Harry’s premium razor and use it on occasion to trim the cost of shaving over time.) That’s not to say I want Gillette to make cheaper-quality razors. But do razor cartridges really need to cost $5 each? If Harry’s can do it for half that price, obviously not.

On the other hand, assuming the gift set has $40 worth of cartridges, a hard-metal razor and travel case for less than $10 more seems like a deal. I guess I can look at it that way.

One final point I found mystifying in product reviews I have read: that the Gillette Fusion 5 razor handle becomes obsolete with the introduction of these newer cartridges. Um, no. The handle introduced in 2006 works with the ProShield cartridges of today. So you don’t need to buy the newer FlexBall design. But after so many years of going from Atra, to Sensor, to Mach 3, to Fusion 5, I was finally ready for a change. I’m sure that my new handle won’t become obsolete in my lifetime.

The classic argument: Straight edge? DE Adjustable Safety razors, Cartridge? Electric? What has the closest shave without razor burn or cuts?

I’ve used them all and I have my personal preferences…. but here is the bottom line.

Unless you really get into shaving and want to spend lots of time and treat it like an engineering exercise or a hobby there is pretty much only one answer.

The Gillette ProGlide ( 5 blade Gillette) is a dam good razor. For 99% of the people out there you are going to get a great close shave, with little if any razor burn or cuts.

On the other hand shaving foam or gel from a can is pretty darn lousy. Its fast. This much is true.

If you never try a SE, or DE or Electric….. there is one thing you can do to improve your shave….

Buy better shaving cream…. In my experience better shaving cream makes a bigger difference than the razor. Pretty much anything is better than the canned foam. Good shaving cream or soap is better than the canned Gel.

Shaving cream in a tube stays fresher and keeps its scent longer than the same product in a tub.

A good shaving cream from a tube (so it stays fresh and the scent doesn’t fade) and a nice shaving brush and bowl and you’ll be happier no matter what you shave with. Just my two cents.

Very sleek case and the handle is very nice. Not powered, but I still switched over to it and still get smooth shaves.
