I became allergic to over the counter hair dye and to the hypoallergenic salon hair dye! Found out I’m allegoric to PPD’s found this PPD free product. It’s great I’m not itching and the color blends in well! They give you a big full bottle, the cream is thick not watery, they give you two sets of strong gloves and a cap to keep it from getting on your skin, plus a clean-up cloth and barrier cream, very little mess putting it on and rinsing out. It rinses completely clear unlike other dyes I’ve used, and it didn’t bleed out on the towel! Only did bleed out on my pillowcase when I slept at night a little. But This is an EXCELLENT PRODUCT! I’m buying it every month! The makers are Brillant!

I started using Madison Reed to touch up my gray roots during the pandemic and have been using since. The product is packaged nicely and comes with the hair color, barrier cream to avoid getting dye on your skin, a small shampoo and conditioner, and gloves. Instructions are easy to follow. I absolutely love the natural color that comes from using this kit, as well as a very nice shine to my hair. I only use this on my roots. I do find that I often have to apply the color twice, even when following the directions and leaving it on for the recommended amount of time, as there are always a few grays that didn’t take the color well the first time. I also find that my grays start to reappear by the third week and by the fourth week, I usually need another touch up. Overall, for me it’s worth it. It’s quick, easy, and looks gorgeous!

I used Light Golden Red, &7NCG, Genova Red.

On the package, the color looked like an exact match for my original hair color. (I have just enough grey, here & there throughout my hair, to want to cover it… for now, anyway. Vanity… right? lol )

I fell in love with Madison Reed’s packaging and the thoughtfulness shown in this very complete hair color kit. The messaging in it dazzled me, as well.

Using the product, I didn’t care for the smell of it, but it wasn’t nearly as bad as some ammonia-based hair color products. So far, so good.

In addition, I was impressed by how much hair color was included. Even with long, thick hair, I was able to cover everything from the roots to the very longest tips of my hair, and do so completely.

The included shampoo and conditioner were both lavish and generous. Again, as someone with very thick hair, this was appreciated.

But then, fresh from the shower, I looked in the mirror.

    Umm…

It looked like the color coverage wasn’t consistent. Not even close.

Worse, when my hair was dry, the color at the top of my head was spectacular, but starting at about ear level, the color was much darker.

Indoors, it looks almost black. On someone as fair-skinned as me, the effect was jarring. Suddenly, every freckle and laugh line seemed more obvious. This was NOT flattering.

Oddly, the ends of my hair barely took any color at all. That was fine, because naturally colored hair is usually lighter (sun bleached) at the ends.

In the accompanying photo, my head is tilted, so I’m looking up. You’re seeing the top of my head as well as my back. Also, that picture was taken on a slightly overcast day, so the variations in color aren’t due to extreme lighting. It looks far worse indoors, but I think the photo conveys the essense of the problem.

Note: It’s been a few years since I was a hair model, but I picked up a lot of hair coloring tips from the pros. So, I’m still mindful of the importance of coloring my hair thoroughly and consistently, and following package directions – to the letter – for the best results.

In other words, it’s not as if I smothered the top of my head with hair dye, and just loosely spread the rest of my hair with far lighter coverage.

Likewise, I didn’t douse the middle (now darkest) band of my hair with extra color, or omit coloring the ends, either.

To me, it looks like this hair color should not be used on long, previously colored hair. I’d ask for a refund if I had anything to return to the seller, but – of course – I used the complete package. So, at best, that was a waste of $30.

I’m going to wait a week so my hair has time to recover, and then I’ll be using an “oops!” products to remove the Madison Reed hair color. Fingers crossed, it’ll restore how my hair looked before using Madison Reed’s hair color. (If that doesn’t work, Plan B is to streak my hair with blonde. At worst, it’ll look “artsy.”)

I’ll agree that the Madison Reed hair color at the top of my head looks exactly as I’d hoped. It’s very close to the color shown on the product’s packaging.

The probem is: The rest of my hair looks awful.

If your hair is short – and, preferably, has never been colored before – you may love Madison Reed.

For me, this was an extremely distressing experience.

Fortunately, I work at home. This week, only my family will see my hair.

If I go out, I’ll wear a hat. Then, my hair will look oddly dark with almost blonde sun-bleaching at the ends. Short-term, I’m okay with that.

I was tempted to give this product two stars because the packaging was a delight to read, and the included gloves, cap, shampoo, and conditioner were wonderful extras.

However, I’m so disappointed by the product itself, I have to give this one star, and share my experience with others, so they don’t make a similar mistake.

I love this brand & this color. So close to my real shade & it is a luxury product through & through. High end packaging for a high quality product. My hair looks healthy even after coloring. The included shampoo & conditioner smells great & gives me a nice shine! No complaints. It’s worth the price you pay especially when compared to what it would’ve cost as a service at a salon.

The Madison Reed Radiant Hair Color Kit in Medium Brown is fantastic for achieving a natural-looking, rich color while covering resistant gray hair completely. I was really impressed with how well this product covered my gray hairs without leaving any patches or uneven spots. The medium brown shade turned out exactly as I hoped—vibrant and true to color.

The application process was straightforward, and the included instructions were easy to follow. The colorant has a pleasant, subtle scent, and it didn’t irritate my scalp, which is a big plus. The conditioning treatment that comes with the kit left my hair feeling incredibly soft and shiny, with no dryness or damage.

I also love that this hair color is free from harsh chemicals, making it a healthier choice for my hair. Overall, I’m thrilled with the results and will definitely be using this product again for my future coloring needs. Highly recommend for anyone seeking great gray coverage and a beautiful, natural-looking color!

I have locs. I did a little research, looking for a permanent dye that isn’t harsh on your hair. I’ve dyed my hair at home a few times over the years and I’ve honestly never spent $30 on dye. It was worth it! I love the color and my locs feel great. I was just going to dye half of the back but now I want my entire head this color so I bought two more. My locs reach the top of my hips. If you have long locs, you’ll probably need 3-4 boxes. I did make one mistake. I washed my hair 3 days prior but forgot that I put product on my roots. My roots did not take the dye. It’s in the back though so once I do the front, it will cover it.
