I finally found the perfect face sunscreen. But you need to use the right amount otherwise it can get a little oily.

  2. Melina

Very oily and ends up making my eyes water throughout the day .

You have to shake this product a lot. There are shaker balls in the bottle, and you have to shake quite a while to get them moving. I took my glasses off to apply before I started shaking the bottle. I thought I noticed movement in front of my face and when I looked down, I realized that I had been slinging the product all over my bathroom. It had been slinging directly out of the pump opening. This product has been on the market for years, so I would have expected better. The product itself has a shimmer and white cast that collects in fine lines, on dry areas on my lips, on enlarged pores and my entire nose. It took a lot of rubbing to spread the shimmer away from these areas and some still remained. I walked away for about 15 minutes and rechecked but after giving the product some time to absorb into the skin, it did not look any better. It has an oiliness that does eventually absorb into dry skin, but not very well in my t-zone. Outside of that, the box and bottle are attractive and it has a very light, neutral to sweet scent. I would not wear this in public.

I was really hopeful for this product to be a winner as I love that it’s a serum with fresh ingredients, but I’m afraid that the formula has missed the mark. The packaging is attractive and looks high end, but the sunscreen serum is greasy and appears to have separated in the bottle even after shaking it prior to applying (see photo for example). Not only does it feel slick and oily, but it smells pretty bad as well- the “kale” scent is not one that I prefer to wear on my face. This product definitely has potential as the concept is great, and the ingredients are really attractive too – but I would not consider purchasing this again until the scent and the viscosity of the formula has improved.

This was a spontaneous purchase. I normally buy a $20 sunscreen.

This is worth the extra money!! First day. I ran short of time and left the house in nothing but this and mascara.

I got so many compliments on my skin.

I just turned 59. I have dry skin. This leaves my face dewy all day.

    Love it!

It does have a white cast to it. Not awful. Even with my olive skin. More like a glow, with out the glitter in most highlighters and illuminators. It’s natural

While I like the idea of a non-toxic, plant-based sunscreen, this Mara sunscreen serum leaves a lot to be desired. First of all, it is greasy. I shook it up before dispensing and it still came out looking like it was separated with a little bit of oil, the white zinc and a yellow, gelatinous glob of something. It goes on greasy and stays greasy. It makes my face look shiny. The second thing I noticed about this sunscreen is its scent. It definitely has a very musty/herbal scent that might be off putting to some. While the scent does dissipate, it is right on your face so you can’t really escape it until it goes away. Lastly, at least for me, I noticed it did leave a slight white cast on my face. It is very subtle but it makes me look a little ghostly with a blueish tinge.

Overall, this sunscreen serum is not for me because it is greasy and leaves my face looking shiny yet ghostly and it is expensive. Pass.

My face has been prone to breaking out lately so I was careful to start using this in only a small area at night. Fortunately I didn’t break out so I started using it on my whole face in the morning and all is still well on that front.

I see this more as a “twofor” that moisturizes and provides some everyday sun protection. It spreads well and in a short time I only detect a dull glow, not any greasiness or white cast. I only use a very small amount though, which is part of the reason I don’t expect it to provide strong, long lasting protection from the sun. It also clearly isn’t water/sweat resistant. If I’m going to be out in the sun for a long time and sweating or swimming, I’ll definitely use a stronger, water-resistant sunscreen.

It still remains to be seen how well this will work for me in the long run, but I don’t think I’ll reorder it because even the small amount I use leaves a very noticeable odor that lingers a bit. It isn’t a bad smell, but I think it is kind of unusual, distinctive, and/or odd. I wouldn’t be surprised if some like it though so YMMV.

My initial experience was pumping oil on my hand, and I didn’t like the idea of putting oil on my face. Then I realized that I was supposed to shake the bottle. It has a rattle when you shake it. I had not used a sunscreen that I had to shake before. It is still oily, but it is mixed with a lotion. This is somewhere between a serum and a cream. It does not feel thick when applied to my face, but I can still sense that it is there. My concern was that having this oil-based sunscreen would make my face sweat more. For some reason, it did not increase my sweat, and I did not feel uncomfortable. I am still concerned that there is too much oil on my face. Because it is oil, it does repel water. It takes a while to wash off. It has a strange odor that I do not care for. Most of the smell disappeared, but I felt it was still slightly present after much time had passed. It is a small bottle, and each pump is a small amount. I will not continue to use it after this bottle is done because of the high price for the small bottle, the oil, and the odor.
