I have used this product for years after it was recommended in a magazine as an inexpensive, yet high quality moisturizer. It will make your skin peel a bit at times, and you will need to keep up on exfoliation. I do notice if I substitute this product with something less expensive, my skin stops looking as clear and stops feeling as smooth.

Let’s be clear. I am 65 years old with wrinkles, so I am not expecting miracles. Even though my skin is sensitive, it has been “good skin” – especially in the last 30 years – no blemishes or discolorations, and very smooth. My dermatologist suggested this particular product as it was the strongest OTC retinol you could get. He said it would help “strengthen” my skin and even it out. But he cautioned me to only use a pea-sized amount for my whole face and only apply it at night, because it reacts badly with the sun. I followed his and the package directions to a T. I washed my face first, used my nightly eye cream just on my eyes, applied the Neutrogena everywhere except my eyes, then moisturized with my normal night cream. The first night, the retinol immediately made my face red, but it didn’t sting. (With my sensitive skin, I was anticipating a ZING! But nothing.) Per the directions, I waited a couple nights and followed the same routine. Same result. Repeated it a couple nights later, then went to every other night, then graduated to “almost” nightly. It still makes my face red, but I still have never felt dryness or stinging. Do I see a difference after one month? Can’t say I do YET, but I am going to give it at least 90 days. If there’s even a HINT of improvement, I am sticking with it. A jar will last for MONTHS so it’s not that expensive in the big scheme of things. (P.S. I noticed no scent whatsoever, and, no, it is NOT a moisturizer, so you need to stick with your normal moisturizer over the top of this.)

I was about to give up due to strong irritations for two months.. Then I accidentally tried a new way, it worked out, and I can use it regularly now!
Tips:
1. When you first use it, apply only 1-2 times a week. If you feel strong irritation, STOP for several days until you feel better.
2. To reduce irritation, after washing your face, don’t apply anything, wait until your face COMPLETELY dry, ~30 minutes, then apply Neutrogena retinol cream, wait for another 20 minutes, then apply your regular cream. After you adapts to it, you can gradually reduce the time between steps. This is what a dermatologist told my friend, it’s a game changer! Hope it helps!

This is the ONLY Neutrogena product I have ever ordered that I’ve been unhappy with. It arrived without a protective covering. It’s a dirty yellowish color and now that I think about it, it appears to have been opened before. It also caused some rash like bumps on my jaw line. I have been using Neutrogena for years but have never used this particular product. It was either very old, previously opened and tampered with or it’s the only Neutrogena product I don’t care for at all. I wish I had been more vigilent about it when it arrived.

This is a good retinol product. It is strong so don’t use every night at first. And stay out of sun when using. It has made my skin smoother, helped with sun spots and wrinkles. I highly recommend.
