Parker’s The Variant DE safety razor is a gorgeous work of art. The “graphite grey” model has a beautiful finish like brushed metal, the dark handle is classy- reminiscent of old-school Gillette razors from the 60’s.

It’s not all form, though. The overall construction oozes quality. It’s a hefty 4oz/110g, so gravity does all the work. The handle has fairly aggressive knurling for grip surety. The adjustment knob at the bottom is out of the way, and turns easily (yet not loose) to adjust blade aggressiveness- continue turning to free the lid and blade.

I own several other safety razors (Merkur Mk34c, Rockwell 2c, Leaf Twig) but it’s my first open-comb or variable razor. Was a little apprehensive about the open comb, but it didn’t significantly increase the challenge of shaving. If anything it seems to aide rinsing more than anything else. The variability is handy because it’s enabled me to easily experiment with, e.g. more aggressive 3 on my face then dialing down to 1 for my sensitive neck.

The instructions caution about over-tightening the adjustment. But you do need to tighten it a bit and get it close to “1”. If you stop when resistance first increases, between the 1 and 2, you’re shaving with a 1.5.

All in all, a fantastic razor and shaving experience. Totally worth it.

My razor from the art of shaving finally broke and I heard good things about this one so I took a chance on it. I doubt I will ever go back to the art of shaving razors.

I am impressed with the quality and ease of use.
The blade is adjustable for advanced or beginner, handle is long enough yet has a weight to it while still being light enough to hold comfortably.

I would purchase this again, although I feel I won’t need to for quite some time as this is a fantastic piece at an unbelievable price.

  5. Phil

Shaving experience and Build quality are excellent. Parker blades also doing great job, the only razor you will ever need.

I am very happy and fully satisfied!

Delivery was slow as it came from the USA, but it did arrive quicker than predicted so all in all not too bad.
It was boxed up nice, but plain which I like. I’m not bothered about how good the box it comes in looks, that usually ends up in the bin or not been used anyway.
Build quality of the razor looks good as well. Apart from there knob you turn to adjust the shave level with been a bit tight (it’s new-ness??) I cannot see anything wrong with it.
This razor shaves really well. The Merkur has gone in the bin its shave was that bad. This though is at the opposite end of the scale. I shave at setting 3-4 with the Merkur, now I’m at 1-2. It ploughs through long beard grow with ease on higher settings. Then for the second and third pass, just tweak it back and your shaving with a lot less aggression.
No cuts, or razor burn and it’s currently pushing my Rockwell S6 to the back of the cabinet. I love it.
I’ve even had a few different blades in it, from Derbys to Feathers, Wilkinson Swords to Bics , they all work without any issues.
    5 out of 5.

    Update
I’ve now tried this razor for a short while and it is still shaving me no problem. Started get a bit razor burn with a certain brand of razor but switched it out and all is good again.
Just a word of warning though, make sure when you are shaving with it set at 1 or 2 that it is actually set there. You can have it set there and still have one full turn left to go. I made this mistake and you quickly work out you’ve set it wrong. I did plough through a few days growth without an issue. So if you struggle to shave long growth off you should maybe give this a try.

Was surprised on how smooth this shaves. No irritation and shaves better than closed combs for me. Been using it as a daily driver. Although i have sensitive skin this razor hasnt caused any irritation and after trying with gillette nacet blades, perma sharps, wilkinson, and derby blades on levels 1-4 it seems to just work compared to most of the close comb razors which cause razor bumps. But again thats just for my face and opinion, but for the price I would definetly recommend trying this razor out.

    Parker Variant Open Comb

    Parker Variant Open Comb

Just received and used this razor for the first time, and it’s time for some ranting and raving. For perspective, I’m new to DE Safety razors, and started by using a bevel razor. After using this for a few weeks, and watching hours and hours of videos about various razors, I settled on the Parker open comb. I was concerned about it being too aggressive or coming in faulty or misaligned.

The razor came with no noticeable flaws with alignment, fit/finish, not screwing down all the way. The razor also does a good job of varying between barely usable 1 to almost scary to use 5 setting, with everything in between. It does not click to a specific spot, so you can infinitely adjust the blade gap with micro adjustments to your liking. For me, the 3-3.25 setting with a personna platinum coated blade was an absolute laser beam. There were no nicks aside from one on my lip that was absolutely my fault.

The soap cleared out of the comb super easy, and the grip/ weight of the razor is perfect for me. Not too heavy, not too light, and zero grip issues.

For the price point of $60, I can confidently say this is the best value for me. The Rockwell 6c requires you to change plates. The Rockwell t2 is too expensive. The merkur progress looks like it’ll slip out of my hands and slice my toe off, and the pearl flexi look too chonky for me. Everything else isn’t adjustable or isn’t worth the money to me.

I would love to hear what everyone else thinks of it, or why they are holding off from trying one.

Parker Variant Open Comb Adjustable Safety Razor

    Cons
. Unlike other quality razors which have their name engraved on their razors, this product lacks the Parker name or logo, raising concerns about its authenticity.
. By enhancing the visibility of the adjustment dial, it would become much easier to use. If the numbers are made black to contrast with the graphite, it would be a simple yet effective way to improve its visibility, and the dot used to align the numbers is barely visible.

    Pros
. You don’t need multiple passes to get a close shave. It is effective and delivers a phenomenal shave in just one pass.
. The razor has a nice weight and feels great and comfortable in hand.
. The range of mild to aggressiveness is highly appreciated.
Although there are minor cons, I absolutely love this razor and believe it deserves a 5-star rating.
If you’re searching for a great present for a wet shaver, I believe this razor could be an excellent option. It provides a high-quality shaving experience and is a solid adjustable safety razor that won’t break the bank.
