R+Co BLEU Surreal Styling Serum, 5 Oz

I got this for my son who has long hair – it is right past his shoulders and he uses Morrocanoil or Aveda to keep his hair smooth and calm down any frizziness. This works just as well as those serums and is at a similar price point. This has a bit more hold than those and also works better in humidity. It has a masculine scent which he really appreciates. This comes in a lovely green plastic with a unique rectangle flip-top cap. I didn’t find an expiration date but the packaging and container are both recyclable.

    Ingredients

R+Co’s new “BLEU” line are the premium offerings of the already high-priced haircare line. Despite the price, I absolutely love the BLEU featherweight hairspray and volumizing mousse, and since I so rarely blow out and/or elaborately style my long, fine hair, a bottle lasts me long enough to justify the price tag.

A little, luckily, goes a long way for this very pricey serum. A smaller than dime-sized amount, applied to damp hair before blow drying, had my fine, wavy hair that is prone to frizz looking smooth as silk. Also added some shine, without looking fake glossed. Does weigh down a bit (again, I have very fine hair, though lots of it) but not too much and loved the way this made my hair look and feel.

It did have a strong, though not unpleasant scent. Which wasn’t bad, but did clash a bit with my regular perfume.

Lastly, will note that it was shipped in an envelope from Amazon, and the fragile outer product box was crushed with the tube open inside. With a product this pricey, that’s concerning so hopefully future deliveries are packed with more care.

I admire this brand’s innovative products, but the scent of this styling serum is so overwhelming you have to decide it will be your signature scent, because hours, days later you can’t escape it. It infuriates me how strong it is. Ugh.

I have naturally wavy hair that’s thick and coarse in texture (Asian genes!). When I’m not pony-tailing it, I wear it down in its naturally wavy state. Depending on the weather, my hair can get quite frizzy, so I’m always looking for ways to tame the frizz. I’ve used lots of different styling products, from gel, to hairspray, to pomade, to sea salt sprays and everything in between. This product caught my interest with its claims of a flexible hold while maintaining softness and shine. For someone who is no stranger to the salon and beauty supply/cosmetic shops, I’m surprised I didn’t know anything about R+Co, but in reading up on the company, I am happy to see they are cruelty-free and their products are paraben and sulfate-free. I itch so many options out there, those are three things I always look for when trying new products.

The styling serum comes in a green tube with a flip top cap. The material of the tube is strangely soft and super pliable. I mention this as the product comes out readily even without much pressure applied to the tube. When capping the tube, I need to be careful not to apply too much pressure or some of the product will spurt out, causing it to dry on the cap. Not a biggie, but something to note.

The smell is not my favorite, but scents are so subjective so I will refrain from critiquing it. I prefer fresher scents or no fragrance at all, which this product is neither. I am glad that it’s not heavily scented though, and it’s definitely not an offensive or perfumy smell.

The hold is as described—a medium hold that doesn’t make your hair feel crispy or hard. I run a bit into my air-dried hair to create some separation in my waves, as well as on the crown to tame flyaways. The product works well for both purposes.

You may wonder why I’m docking two stars if the product works well and as described. Well, as I always factor price in the assessment of a product, a premium-priced product would have to blow me away to earn a 5-star review. At its current listing price of $70 for this 5-ounce tube, it doesn’t live up to its exorbitant price tag. For one, the product packaging doesn’t reflect the price, and there isn’t anything memorable about its performance. Perhaps I’m missing something, or I’m just really good at finding quality products at reasonable prices, but I just don’t see the value.

Love this serum. I have naturally curly hair that I straighten. I live at the beach and have never found a serum that keeps my hair looking shiny, straight and without frizz even at the beach! My husband said”wow your hair looks great” after being at the beach for over 2 hours!! Well worth the money!
