I was using Redken Hardwear 16 for countless years and went nuts when it looked like they stopped making it. After some searching it seemed like this was the “replacement” with new packaging and updated graphic. In desperation, and with little hope, I bought it to try it. Hardwear was the absolute best product I had ever found for creating stiff hold when I needed it and giving shine that lasted. I didn’t think I’d ever find a replacement.
First use of this eased my mind. It seems to be exactly the same as they “old” product. I had some of the original version left and compared the two – looked and felt exactly the same. Used it and was thrilled. I had no reason to think there was anything different except for the packaging.
For a first time user I can offer that this is probably not for anything except a firm hold. It worked exceptionally well if you dampen your hands a bit, either work it in or smooth it on a particular area and then blow dry that area for a short time to get incredible shape that doesn’t look like it’s concrete. I haven’t experienced any residue when I shampoo my hair (and I use it frequently)…one shampoo and it’s gone.
The second pic is to show how it thick it is. I’ve had far too many that say “super strong” and when I squirt them out of the bottle they just spread all over the place. This stuff is nice and thick. I love that about it – and to make it go further I started dampening my fingers or hands before working it in because the thickness can make it a little difficult to get the even coverage I want.

I like Redken hardware, but the price has gone way up (like everything else).
Gel holds well and doesn’t look greasy or sticky. Received quickly, just too expensive – tho I’ll buy it again!

I used the previous formula for years and was very apprehensive when they reformulated/repackaged.
I have thin, baby fine, curly hair and this is the BEST gel for my hair type out of the many I’ve tried.
To reduce stickiness I mix it in damp hair with a leave in conditioner. I haven’t noticed any changes in the excellent curl, volume and hold this product provides from the previous formula. My loyalty to this product remains the same. It is my go to for my hair type.

I recently went with a shorter bob style, and a small section of hair near my face/ear refused all efforts to be styled. It was totally straight. I tried more mousse, styling lotion, rolling it in a brush and blowing dry on COLD. Nothing worked for very long.
Along comes this product. I applied it all over (dime size for the bob) and it not only held the cowlick in style, but gave the rest of my hair a wonderful lift and body. Love this product!
